Robert A. Green, 81, of Havre died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at his home of natural causes.
Cremation has taken place and his memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Chapel with Tim Maroney officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Highland Cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the St. Jude Parish Hall immediately after the service at the cemetery.
Robert was born in Havre on Feb. 24, 1924, to William Perry and Barbara Lucille Green. He grew up 5 miles north of Havre, where his father farmed and worked in a coal mine with Fred Gertson. In 1936, the family moved to Havre, where his father worked for the Great Northern and Home Oil Company. His father died May 25, 1938. Bob attended schools in Havre, and in July 1940, he joined the Army and went to Fort Lewis, Wash., to receive training in the Signal Corps. From there, he went to Camp Claiborne, La., for more training. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, he left Camp Claiborne for New York City. He left New York City in January of 1942 for Europe and was among the first troops to land in Ireland. He moved to England and was at camp near London. He went through the German blitz of London without a scratch. He did more training there, and then went to Liverpool, loaded their boat and made the invasion of Africa landing in Oran in November. He went to Arras Africa and was attached to the 15th Air Force. After the invasion of Italy, he moved there, still with the 15th Air Force. After being overseas two years, he had enough points to come home to Fort Missoula. He was honorably discharged in July 1945.
Bob met Carolyn Stremcha and they were married Jan. 3, 1946. Bob worked as a carpenter for Dale Anderson Construction and went into business for himself two and a half years later. Bob operated Robert A. Green Construction for 35 years. He built many homes in Havre, Malta, Gildford and Chinook, leaving them as his trademark. Log homes were his specialty. Bob worked for the Havre School District as a bus driver for eight years, retiring in 1990. Bob also operated a small ranch east of Havre. He sold the ranch in 2000, and he and Carolyn moved to town that May.
Bob was a member of the V.F.W., DAV, Knights of Columbus, Elks, Havre Contractors Association and the Optimists.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Green.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Green of Havre; daughter, Ann (Barry) Remus of Havre; son, William Green of Umatilla, Ore.; sisters, Barbara (Dave) Abbott of Havre and Jackie Gagne of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
