Alfred Breen was born in Graafschap, michigan on June 7, 1869, the son of Kryn Breen and Nellie Visser. He was born two years after his parents immigrated to America from the Netherlands. The family came from a town called Ouddorp.

Alfred married Susan Smitter on July 5, 1894 in Lake City, Missaukee County, Michigan. To this union were born three children. Kryn, his oldest was born the year after their marriage, but lost his life in France during World War I. Their next child Lambert Louis was born in 1897 and married Gertrude Ozinga. Their third child was named Nellie Breen who married Earl Faught.

Alfred's children were all very young when he died on October 8, 1904. He died from Typhoid Fever. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
