Marion Getty, daughter of Charles and Lu (Yunker) Getty was born on September 8, 1918 in Hecla, South Dakota, where she grew up and attended school. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hecla. Marion was united in marriage to Albert “Ole” Swearingen on June 3, 1937 in Britton, South Dakota. This union was blessed with ten children. Marion spent most of her life raising their family. During this time, she also worked at the Riverside, Oakes Café, Shafer Seed, and the Oakes Good Samaritan Society until her retirement. Ole Swearingen died on October 31, 2004. Marion became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society Oakes in March of 2006.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, and enjoyed participating in church activities, especially Ruth Circle and folding church bulletins. Marion’s favorite pastimes were reading, watching Jeopardy, and she especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Marion died on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Society Oakes, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. She was 90 years old.
She is survived by nine children, 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, and a sister.
Marion was preceded in death by her husband, Ole, one daughter, Peggy, three brothers, Albert, Vernon and Donald, two grandsons, Dean and Ryan, and a son-in-law, Miles Roemmich.
