Adelia, a cook in the 158th Aero Squadron, survived the torpedoing & sinking of the troopship "Tuscania" on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland & Ireland by German submarine UB-77.
He returned from World War I aboard the "Louisville" in May 1919 as a cook in the 213th Aero Squadron. On both voyages, he listed his mother, Mrs. Mehala [sic] Shortridge, of 605 American Avenue, Long Beach, California, as his next-of-kin.
