Elizabeth Shimo Dies at Age of 78

Mrs. Elizabeth Shimo, 78, of 159 Oak Street, Taylor, died Saturday at home after an illness.

Born in Austria-Hungry, a daughter of the late Emil and Elizabeth Kavulich Kandra, she lived in Taylor 60 years. Mrs. Shimo was a charter member of St. John the Baptist Church, Taylor, and its Altar and Rosary Society. Her husband, George, died June 26, 1955.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. John Podracky, and Mrs. Charles Carey, Baltimore, Md.; Mrs. Joseph Skoviera, Endwell, N.Y.; eight sons, John, and Elmer, this city; George, Endicott, N.Y.; Francis, Moosic; Andrew, Baltimore; Matthew, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Michael, Parma, Ohio, and Joseph, at home; 60 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 9 A.M. from the home with mass at 9:30 in St. John's Church. Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.†

♥ Taylor Couple to Mark Golden Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. George Shimo, 159 Oak St., Taylor, will mark their golden wedding anniversary Monday with a mass at 9 A.M. in St. John's Slovak Roman Catholic Church, Taylor.

Rev. J. A. Ondovchak, pastor, will celebrate the mass, assisted by Rev. Stephen Kollar, Holy Family Slovak Church, this city. A family breakfast will follow in St. John's Hall, Taylor. A reception will be held from 6 P.M. to midnight for relatives and friends at the hall.

The couple, natives of Czechoslovakia, was married Aug. 18, 1902, in Holy Family Church by the late Rev. Andrew Pavco. Mrs. Shimo is the former Miss Elizabeth Kandra. Mr. Shimo has operated a gasoline station near his home for the past 25 years. Prior to that he was employed in the mines.

There are 11 children: Mrs. Charles Carey and Joseph Shimo, at home; John, Elmer and Francis Shimo, this city; George, Matthew and Mrs. Joseph Skoviera, Endicott, N.Y.; Andrew and Mrs. John Podracky, Baltimore, Md., and Michael Shimo [Shemo], Cleveland, Ohio. There also are 21 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.♥

~•♥•~George Shimo and Elizabeth Kandra were united in holy matrimony in Holy Family Church in Scranton, PA on August 18, 1902. They were escorted to the church in a horse and buggy driven by the town undertaker, Mr. Davis. Fifty years later for the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, Mr. Davis again drove George and Elizabeth to the church as they renewed their vows.♥
