Former Alaska resident Sidney O. Gaustad, 82, of Seaside, Ore., died Jan. 13, 2004, in Warrenton, Ore. A funeral was held at the Seaside American Legion Hall, 1315 Broadway. Private interment was at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Mr. Gaustad was born Dec. 28, 1921, in Houston, Minn., to Peter and Clara (Ness) Gaustad. He was raised and educated in Minnesota. On Dec. 23, 1949, he married Beulah Pierce in Anchorage. Mr. Gaustad enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in northern France and in central Europe. He was discharged in 1945. He worked in civil service as a telephone technician foreman for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1981. He and his wife moved to Seaside in 1988. In Seaside, Mr. Gaustad was a member of Seaside American Legion Post 99, Seaside Elks Lodge and the Royal Order of the Moose, Seaside Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Beulah of Seaside; daughters, Karen Merrill of Louisville, Colo., and Christine Ebstein of Clinton, Mass.; son, Richard Gaustad of Magna, Utah; brothers, Cyrus Gaustad of Port Hueneme, Calif., and Neil Gaustad of Houston, Minn.; sisters, Irene Tweito of Waukon, Iowa, and Ann Cauthen of San Diego; and eight grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Lower Columbia Hospice, 2111 Exchange St., Astoria, OR 97103. Arrangements are with Cald-well's Funeral Home in Seaside.
