Abdon C. Lager, 96, of Winthrop, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at the Gaylord Lakeview Home.
Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Bernadotte Lutheran Church, Bernadotte Township, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the church services, Thursday. Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel of Winthrop is handling services.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Vianne and Richard Engwall of Minnetonka; grandchildren, Garth, Meredith and Craig; our great- grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marian Lager of Winthrop; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maude in August 2000; brothers Chester and Allen; and sisters, Edna Palmer and Agnette Anderson.
He was born Feb. 15, 1904, in Alfsborg Township, Sibley County, to August and Emma (Bergren) Lager. He attended District 54 and Winthrop Public Schools. He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture in 1926. He returned to the family farm in Alfsborg Township. He also measured land for area farmers. Under the direction of the University of Minnesota, he grew and harvested one of the first soybean crops in Minnesota, in 1928. He married Maude Wedin on March 25, 1931, in Hector. They farmed the Lager family farm beginning in 1944. He was a member of Bernadotte Lutheran Church, where he was active in the men's organization and sang in the choir for more than 80 years. He was a member of the Sibley County School District Reorganization group from 1948-49. He belonged to the Minnesota Farm Bureau and received the organization's President's Award. He was a Sibley County historian.
