Born March 4, 1903, in Brigham City, Utah, to George W. and Emeline P. Watkins. He married Ada Stromberg on December 24, 1927, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple; she died July 31, 1988. He graduated from the University of Utah where he was active in music and athletics. He played on the U. of U. basketball team, and held the Rocky Mountain Conference record and the broad (long) jump. He taught school for 15 years, administered the Utah State Teachers Retirement System for 3 years and was manager and chief home office underwriter of a life insurance company in Salt Lake City and San Francisco for 22 years. He served as officer and president of the Western States Home Office Underwriters Association, composed of Home Office Underwriters from most of the life, health, and accident companies located west of the Mississippi River. An active member of the LDS Church, he filled a mission in the Western States in 1924-26. He served in numerous ward and stake positions, primarily as a teacher, music director, and in clerical departments. He conducted choir and congregational singing for more than 60 years. He served in the Salt Lake LDS Temple for 13 years.
He is a vile by his four daughters and their husbands, Lynone (Lynne) and Leland Jorgensen, Sandy; LaRae and Jerry Jorgensen, Cottonwood Heights; Carolyn and Edwin Kimball, Sandy; and Beverly and Steve Montgomery, San Antonio, Texas; sister, Phyllis Bartlett (Elmer), Walnut Creek, California; brother, Perry L. Watkins (Mildred), Northern Calu; and sister-in-law, Areba C. Watkins, Salt Lake City; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by two sisters, three brothers, and a grandson.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 13, 1992, 12 noon, at Murray 24th Ward Chapel . Interment Murray City Cemetery.
