Truck Plows into Decatur Work Group. Two Seriously Hurt, 11 Leap to Safety.
Decatur, Mich. Three Decatur, Mich. Three Decatur Railroad workers were injured, two critically, Thursday afternoon when a truck crashed into a group of 14 workers who were walking along a county road east of Decatur.
Reported in critical condition today in Lake View Community Hospital, Paw Paw, are Harry Ball, 52, suffering from a fractured leg and possible internal injuries, and Evan Stroud, 36. Hospital authorities said they are continuing their examination of Stroud to determine the extent of his injuries.
A third injured worker, Kenneth Booth, was treated by a local physician, but was not hospitalized. Booth suffered a fractured jaw as a result of the crash.
WALKING TO TRUCK. The workers told local police officer Frank Hazzard that they were walking along the edge of the pavement of the road, which runs along the Michigan Central Railroad tracks, en route back to their truck at the time of the accident. They said that a truck driven by Preston Pickney, of East Decatur crashed into the group, but that all of the workmen except Ball, Stroud and Booth were able to get out of the way.
Officer Hazzard said his morning that the group of workers was walking on the wrong side of the road, with traffic, at the time of the accident. Hazzard said Pinckney told him he was traveling about 40 miles per hour at the time of the accident.
Hazzard said no charges have been filed against Pinckney, pending the outcome of the condition of Ball and Stroud. State police from the Paw Paw post this morning were called into investigate the case, Hazzard reported.
