Abbie Heying was born in 1890 in Hospers, Ia. She met and married Lewis Krebs in 1909. Over the next 32 years they moved from Alton, Ia to Winner, SD, to Kennebec, SD, and finally settled in Rapid City, SD where Lewis worked as a carpenter, funiture mover and farmer. Abbie helped with the farm and gave birth to 11 children, Edwin - 1910, Marion - 1911, Marie - 1913, Ernest - 1915, Alois - 1917, Clarence (Mickey) - 1919, Luella -= 1921, Pauline - 1923, Dorothy (Elaine) - 1925, Mary Lou - 1928, and Margaret - 1933.

They survived the depression, then WWII. Lewis passed in 1941. Two of their sons, Ernie and Mickey, went into the military. Abbie continued to run the farm and raise the children. There were 6 daughters still in school.

Over the years, Abbie sent all the girls to college. Back then there were no student loans. She paid their tuition with the proceeds from the farm, selling eggs, milk, and vegetables.

Abbie was preceded in death by her daughter, Pauline in 1978 and her son, Edwin in 1981.

She was survived by 9 of her 11 children, 32 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Her strength and character live on in her family.
