The family was in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana, by 1822 and in Tippicanoe County, Indiana before 1829. They were then in Dade County, Missouri by 1850.

Anderson was called "Huey" by his mother which he detested, so he dropped his middle name.
-----

Anderson's first wife:
Elizabeth "Betsy" Lane, was born 28 May, 1817, in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio They were married on 15 Aug, 1835, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. She died sometime in 1842, in Indiana. Elizabeth's father was Daniel Lane.

Isaac was born on 24 Feb, 1840, in Missouri and died on 23 Jun, 1916, in Oregon.

There were 2 additional births but the children were either stillborn or died young. There is no record for them. They were born in Indiana.

Elizabeth's parents and some of her siblings are buried at the Farmers Institute Cemetery, Romney, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

Anderson's second wife:
*Mary Lane (a cousin to Elizabeth) was born on 19 May, 1844, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

*Note: Although Anderson's marker indicates his wife Mary Lane Darneille is buried with him, she is not. She is buried at Croxton Memorial Park in Grants Pass, Oregon.

In 1853, Anderson trekked the Oregon Trail with his family. At Ft. Boise, Anderson joined other pioneers in following Elijah Elliott on his "short-cut" across Eastern Oregon following the Malheur River. This route would eliminate continuing on the Oregon Trail down the treacherous Columbia River. However, this wagon train became known as "The Lost Wagon Train" because of the difficulties suffered in crossing eastern Oregon. Anderson arrived in Lane County and secured a Donation Land Claim of 640 acres (near today's Junction City).

Upon settling on his DLC near Alvadore, he became a founding member of the local Masonic Lodge.
