Herman Lewis Carter, 76, of Buena Vista, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 20, 2009. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to everyone that met him. Herman will be missed by his great attitude towards life and warm, gentle personality. He was a member of Poplar Hill Presbyterian Church. Mr. Carter is preceded in death by his parents, William Lacy "Pete" Carter and Janie Hatcher Carter; a son, Larry Lewis Carter; sisters, Dimple Hazelwood, Mildred Rhodes, Mary Helsel and Bernice Dempsey; and a brother, Albert James Carter. Herman is survived by his loving wife and life partner of 57 years, Trudi Henson Carter; two loving sons, Martin Ray Carter and Richard Herman Carter Sr., both of Buena Vista; four grandchildren, Richard Herman Carter Jr., Adam McKemy, RaeAnn Carter, and Kellan Carter. Also surviving is sister, Margaret Holland, of Buena Vista; three brothers, Henry Carter and wife, Ruby, of Glasgow, Francis Carter and wife, Sue, of Charlotte, N.C., and Kenneth Carter, of Buena Vista; sister-in-laws, Lou Newcomer and husband, Bill, Elsie Smith and husband, Herman, and Lucy Hotchkiss; and brother-in-laws, Henry and Russell Henson. Herman loved the game of golf and was a member of the Vista Links Golf Course in Buena Vista. He was a past loyal member of the Lexington Moose Lodge and the Lexington Golf and Country Club. Herman retired from Charles W. Barger and Sons in 1998 with 47 years of service. He will be missed by many friends that he met on the golf course and whom he worked with along his journey through life. Herman will also be missed by his very special friends at Dave's Produce, Dave and Teresa Alexander and Barbara Wilhelm. The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home.
