Mr. Berns had been a chief warrant officer with the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Nola M. Berns; daughters, Bondina ''Bonnie Goldstein of Granada Hills, Constance ''Connie'' M. Merillat of Sylmar, Donna S. Keating of Tustin and Patricia ''Patti'' K. May of Mission Viejo; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Thursday, with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Saddleback Chapel in Tustin.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Ceceila Church in Tustin.
Burial will be in Riverside National Cemetery, Calif.
