Theophilus was a corporal in Company C of the 11th New Jersey Infantry in the Civil War. He enlisted on August 5, 1862 and mustered out on July 6, 1863. Theophilus was than transferred into Regiment United States Veteran Reserve Corps on July 6, 1863 and discharged on June 24, 1865.

THEOPHILUS PHILLIPS
Theophilus Phillips, veteran of the Civil War who died at his home, 1067 East State Street yesterday afternoon, following a prolonged illness, will be buried from his residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, under direction of Poulson & Coleman. Mr. Phillips was one of the oldest residents in Wilbur. Although having been ill several months, his condition was not considered serious until Monday, when he was stricken with paralysis. He was 80 years old. Mr. Phillips was born in Hopewell. He was a member of Company C. Eleventh Regiment, Volunteers of New Jersey. After the war he was engaged as a millwright, but had lived retired several years. He is survived by three sons, William, Horatio and G. Dunbar Phillips and one daughter, Miss Ella M. Phillips.
