ELECTRA - Lurline Smith, age 78, of Electra passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009, at her residence.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009, at the First Baptist Church with Charles Nichols, pastor of the Southside Baptist Church of Wichita Falls, and Paul Winegeart, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Electra, officiating. Interment will follow in the New Electra Cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Electra.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Aulds Funeral Home of Electra.
Lurline was born June 11, 1930, in Electra to J. L. and Oda Baird Clayton.
She graduated from Electra High School in 1948 and then attended North Texas Teacher's College.
She and Rodney Smith were married September 15, 1950 at the First Baptist Church in Electra.
Lurline was a teacher in Houston for one year. In 1968, she returned to Electra and was a teacher's aide in the special education department for physical and mentally handicapped children at Dinsmore Elementary School for seventeen years. After her retirement, she spent many hours as a volunteer at the Electra Public Library where she was appointed as a member of the Electra Public Library Board. She also was a member of the Friends of Electra Public Library who were very active in planning special events and student programs for the library. She enjoyed volunteering for story time and was always trying to teach children to read. Lurline was awarded the State of Texas Literacy Award in 2000 and was honored as a volunteer of the year at Dinsmore Elementary School. She also was honored by the Council of Exceptional Children West County Co-Op recognizing her dedicated service to special children.
Mrs. Smith was the co-owner of DaveMar Printing Company. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Mission Friends. She loved gardening and was frequently seen cleaning flower beds outside the library.
Survivors include her husband, Rodney of Electra; one sone, David Smith and wife, Deborah of Duncan, Oklahoma; one daughter, Martha Hutchings and husband, Marc, of Iowa Park; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eva Delia Patrick, Oda Clayton, and J. L. Clayton.
The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 406 West Garrison, Electra, TX 76360.
