Polly Ann Brown's marker states she died in 1903. This is incorrect. Sadly, her stone was engraved wrong. There is proof she died in 1933, and she is found in the census as late as 1930. This is an unfortunate mistake, which I would like to get corrected on her marker.

Her age has been calculated from several sources (using her death date and the death record which states she was 78 years, 5 months and 12 days old when she died.)

Polly Ann Nickerson Brown was the daughter of Thomas J. Nickerson and his second wife, Sarah Eliza Claflin, (married about 1854 in Indiana.)

The family and then Polly, moved eventually from LaPorte Indiana, to Nodaway, Missouri, several areas in California, then Oregon, and finally, Washington state.

She married Civil War Veteran Daniel Webster Brown January 2, 1873 in San Luis Obispo, California. There were 4 children, George W., John C., Alice, and D.W., Jr.

Mrs. Brown was approved for admission to the Washington Veterans' Home but was never admitted.

She died of influenza at the age of 78 years at Port Orchard.

It appears Polly was Daniel's second wife. September 20, 1868, D. W. Brown married Amanda Vaughn in San Joaquin County, California. There was one child born, Minerva.

Amanda Vaughan Brown passed away sometime after Minerva was born, but before 1873, when Daniel married again at the beginning of that year. It is my belief Minerva is listed in records as the mother of Minerva because she essentially raised her from a toddler.

In 1910, Polly was living in Washington state, Pacific County, in South Bend. She said she was 54 with her 16 year old son, Daniel, Jr., in the household. She said she had been married 34 years and had five children with all five living. Her husband was not in the household at that time. She was actually married 37 years at that time. Her son was working as a wagon driver carrying wood.

By 1930, Polly was widowed and still living in Washington, in Kitsap County in Annapolis on Lawrence St. She was paying $10 a month in rent there, and was living alone.
