Walter A. Elifritz
Walter Alvy Elifritz was born in Washington County, Illinois, March 2, 1873 and departed this life August 12, 1949, at the Soldiers and Sailors Home at Grand Island, Nebraska, at the age of 76 years, five months and ten days.
He came to Nebraska with his parents in 1880 and in 1882 he returned to Illinois. In 1887 he again came to Nebraska with his father to live on a farm four miles south of Edgar. He resided in the vicinity of Edgar until his death.
He was married to Anna I. Warren March 27, 1901. To this union one daughter was born. He leaves to mourn his passing his daughter, Mrs. Dora Moss of Madras, Oregon; one brother, Oman Elifritz of Edgar; two grandchildren, Mrs. Maxine Salser of Vista, California, and James Lee Moss of Madras, Oregon, and one great-grandchild. Also a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
His wife passed away June 28, 1945. His father, mother, one brother and tree sisters preceded him in death.
He enlisted at the time of the Spanish-American War and was wounded in action. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He enlisted June 21, 1898, in Co. H, 1st Regiment, Nebraska. He was enrolled and mustered in as a private at Hastings, Nebraska, with recruiting detachment at San Francisco, California, from June 27 to August 21, 1889, and Honolulu, Hawaii, from August 28 to November 7, 1898. He joined the company at Manila P. I., from March 30, to April 17, 1899; April 23 to June 13, 1899, all dates inclusive. All sickness in line of duty. Wounded in action March 30, 1899, Guiguinto, P. I., and April 23, 1899, at Quinqua, P. I.
Funeral services were held at the Edgar Methodist Church, Monday, August 15, 1949, at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Francis J. Aucock in charge.
Mrs. John Ough, Mrs. Robert Mikkelsen, Dale Jackson and Kenneth Cassell sang "Does Jesus Care" and "Under His Wings." Mrs. Lydia Phelps was at the piano.
Pallbearers were Donald Jacobs, Gordon Jacobs, Wesley Jacobs Jr., Lloyd Brooks, Byron Avers and Finis Basey.
Military services were conducted at the grave by American Legion Post of Edgar. Firing squad was Dale Johnson, Charles Erickson, Gene Brown, Richard Wicker and Vernon Melvin, with Ferd Schnittker in command. Color bearers were Allen Cottam and Chester Larson and color guards were Clark Powell and Quinton McCauley.
Interment was made in the Edgar Cemetery.
