JOHN COONEY DIED AT HIS HOME IN NEW MILFORD THURSDAY
After suffering for four years with general debility, John Cooney, Sr., a civil war veteran, died at midnight Thursday at his home in New Milford, being 78 years of age. Mr. Cooney formerly resided in Rockford and while here he was a member of the local G.A.R. camp.
Mr. Cooney was born in County Meath, Ireland, May 1827, and he was married Aug. 1849, his wife's maiden name being Miss Margaret Reynolds. Two years after his marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Cooney came to Winnebago county and for some time the couple resided in Rockford. Later Mr. and Mrs. Cooney moved to New Milford, where Mr. Cooney conducted a harness shop until it was destroyed by a fire that visited New Milford.
Mr. Cooney served with Company D, 11th Illinois Cavalry, to which A.M.Hoffman of this city belonged.
The funeral services will be conducted at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning from the New Milford Methodist church. Burial will take place in the village cemetery. Besides his wife, Mr. Cooney leaves a number of children, one of them being William Cooney, a Rockford barber.
