Cairo Man Killed
West Vienna, ILL. (AP) A head on collision today on Illinois I46 near West Vienna killed Charles G. Britt, 63, of Cairo, and seriously injured his two passengers and the driver of the second car.
Following article published by Centralia Evening Sentinel Wed. Oct. 28, 1970: One Killed, three hurt in accident. A Cairo man was killed and two passengers in his car and the driver of the second car received major injuries early today in a two-car accident on Rt. 146 between West Vienna and Anna. State police in Cairo said Charles G. Britt, 63, of Cairo, was pronounced dead on arrival at Union County Hospital, Anna. Two passengers in the Britt car, Mrs. Aleta Parker, 30, and Michael Parker, 13, both of Cairo received major injuries and were taken to Union County Hospital, police said. Joe Throgmorten, 63, of Vienna, driver of the other car was taken to Marion Memorial Hospital with major injuries, police said. According to police the car driven by Throgmorton was going west and was passing a truck when the two cars hit head on. The accident happen at 7:45 a.m. about one half mile west of the Ft. 27 and Rt. 146 intersection, police said. Bad driving conditions early today contributed to a sharp rise in traffic accidents in Southern Illinois. District 13 State Police headquarters at Dur Quoin said troopers were assigned to six accidents this morning. The headquarters aid the substation at Cairo also handled several accident calls.
