Funeral services for William Hoge "Bill" Carr Jr., 85, a good husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and godly man, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at the Williston United Methodist Church with the Revs. Cindy Fuller and Tom Summers officiating. Burial was at the Williston Cemetery, with Masonic rites accorded. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Folk Funeral Home, Williston, S.C.

The family has suggested that memorials be made to Williston United Methodist Church, 6030 Springfield Road, Williston, SC 29853.

Bill died on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007.

Born in Princeton, W.Va., he was a son of the late Bertalee Sackett and Dr. William H. Carr Sr. He served during the Korean Conflict as a captain in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps and was recipient of the Bronze Star.

He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, attended the University of Tennessee and retired from Allied General Nuclear Services as a chemical engineer. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the American Nuclear Society and the National Society of Professional Engineers. His biography is published in Who's Who in America, in Frontiers of Science and Technology, in Finance and Industry and in Science and Engineering.

He was a member of the Williston United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees and was in the church choir. He was a member of the Williston Lions Club, served as district governor of Lions International in 1982-1983, served as president of the S.C. Lions Sight Conservation Association, was a member and chairman of the Council of Governors for the S.C. Lions in 1989-1990, was awarded Lion of the Year in 1975 and 1990, and was inducted into Lions International Hall of Fame in 2005.

He was a member of Hope Masonic Lodge No. 126 since 1942, served as president of the Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce, served as chairman on the Barnwell County Economic and Development Board, served as a board member of the Barnwell County Hospital, and was past president and board chairman of Oak Ridge Methodist Hospital. He was Citizen of the Year for the town of Williston in 1995, and was an avid bridge player.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Florence Smith Carr; daughters, Melissa Sullivan of Palm Beach, Fla., and Anne Carr of Ocala, Fla.; sons, Robert Alan "Bob" Carr of Williston and William Warren "Bill" Carr of Ocala, Fla.; grandchildren, Kevin Eller, Robbie Carr, Erin Ryan, Cindy Bodiford, Austin Carr, Sophia Carr, and Olivia Carr ;and great-grandchildren Makayla Carr, Haley Altman, Madeline Eller, Katherine Ryan, and Brian Earl Bodiford Jr.

Folk Funeral Home, Williston, S.C., was in charge of arrangements.
