John Thomas Cauthen was born at Friendship near Americus in the eastern part of middle Georgia. The famly moved to Alabama around his twelfth birthday, and he grew to manhood in St. Clair County, AL. He was a large man, over six feet tall and weighed about 200 pounds. His father was a slave owner, and when the Civil War came, John Thomas and his brothers elnlisted in the Confederate Army. He received a bullet in his hip which he carried as long as he lived.
After returning from the War, he married Lucinda Carolyn Meharg September 19, 1865 in adjoining Calhoun County (Calhoun Co. Marriage Records) who was born in December 1841 in Alabama. John T and Carolyn Cauthen remained in Alabama until 1870 and then they moved to Texas, traveling in covered wagons. The 1880 Census found them living in Ellis Co., Texas just south of Dallas (Precinct #4 House #394)and shows that their first three children were born in Alabama and that "Jimmy, Tommy and Bailey" were born in Texas. Also in their household was Fanny Meharg age 17 labeled, a sister to John's wife, Lucinda. Information from Mary C. Potts
