Son of David Mast and Mary Shull. Married his first cousin, Caroline L. Mast (daughter of John Mast and Susan Harman). They had five children: William Harrison, John Carroll, David Finley, Roy (died in infancy), and Mary Elizabeth.

Served in Co B, 11th Battalion North Carolina Home Guards, CSA.
