SPANISH AMERICAN WAR VETERAN

Robert Swan Anderson was born February 28, 1873 in Bloomington, Illinois. He was the son of Peter and Carrie (Lundberg) Anderson. Both of his parents had been born in Sweden.

MILITARY RECORD: Enlisted April 30, 1898 at Camp Rogers, Washington; served in Company "M" of 1st Washington Volunteer Infantry; and was discharged on November 1, 1899 at Presidio, California.

Robert Swan Anderson registered for the draft at age 45. He was a Machinist Helper at the Puget Sound Navy Yard and was living at Hotel Western in Bremerton, Washington. He listed his nearest relative as his mother, Mrs. Carrie Gylfe of Manette, Kitsap County.

He was admitted to the Soldiers' Home at Orting, Washington on October 5, 1910. He was honorably discharged March 24, 1916. In 1925, he requested admission to the Washington Veterans' Home in Retsil, Washington and was admitted on November 21, 1925.

Robert was married to Margaret Brock Herle on June 5, 1903 at San Francisco. She applied for admission to the Veterans home on 31 October 1925. Margaret died in 1929 and is buried at the Veterans Home Cemetery.

In 1930, Robert and his new wife Clara were residents of the Washington Veterans' Home in Retsil. When Mr. Anderson was 81, the Veterans Home became his legal guardian.

Robert died March 13, 1959 per his grave marker; however, Washington death records show (transcribed, not original)Robert S. Anderson died age 86 at Western State Hospital at Fort Steilacoom on March 12, 1959.
