SPANISH AMERICAN WAR VETERAN

John Adkins was born May 19, 1875 or 1876 in Monticello, Kentucky. John indicated his birth date differently on two different soldiers' home applications; however, his gravestone is engraved with an April 1877 date. His parents were Joel and Clara (Kennedy) Adkins.

MILITARY RECORD:
Spanish American War service - Enlisted May 13, 1898 in Knoxville, Tennessee; served in Co. H of the 4th Tennessee; and was discharged June 16, 1899, at Savannah, Georgia. He mustered out with the rank of Sergeant. He received $30 a month pension.

He applied for admission to the State Soldiers' Home, Orting on November 20, 1928. He indicated that he was 52 years old, was 5 foot, 11 inches tall, was of fair complexion, and was a resident of Snohomish. He had been in Washington state continuously since 1906. His occupation was that of farmer and he indicated that he was a widower and divorced. The only marriage he listed was performed in Craborchard, Tennessee. His divorce was listed as December 21, 1901. He had five living children: Charles C., Martin Cleo, Doyle C, Lester and Arnold J. Adkins; all were current residents of Marysville, Washington.

On April 7, 1930, Mr. Adkins applied for admission to the Washington Veterans' Home, Retsil. He was discharged and later returned. On 4 January 1961, he died at Retsil with his son Arnold at his side. Funeral arrangements were with Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home in Port Orchard and burial was at Veterans Home Cemetery.
