Obituary~Mary C. Mayfield
She was a daughter of the Hon. J. F. Sitzes and was born and reared in Madison county, Missouri. In 1864 while still a girl, she made a profession of faith in Christ and united with a Baptist church.
In October 1867 she became the wife of Dr. A.J. Mayfield. To them were born two sons and two daughters, who are still living, viz: Mrs. J.Q. Ramsey, Eldorado, Ill., Mrs. H.A. Clark, Lutesville, Mo., Dr. George F. Mayfield, Elcampo, Tex., and Boyd Mayfield, St. Louis. These and their father, together with her sister, Mrs. W.H. Mayfield, St. Louis, and a brother, Juan Sitzes, of near Marquand, Mo., are left to mourn their loss. These were all with her in her last illness here in Fredericktown.
Her disease defied the medical skill of Fredericktown and St. Louis and on June 22, 1910 at 5:00 p.m. she yielded to the invitation of the Master to come up higher.
Rev. W.A. Davault of Marble Hill, her long time pastor and friend, and her new pastor, the writer, conducted the funeral at Moore's chapel and laid her body to rest in the old Sitzes cemetery amid a multitude of sorrowing friends and relatives.
Brother Davault preached a touching sermon and told of her Christian graces as a mother, wife, neighbor and friend. Many told the writer that she never had an enemy. Her pastor told of her patient, submissive suffering during her illness, and of her willingness to go.
For 57 years she lived in the flesh and she will continue to live many generations in the lives of her children who have risen up to call her blessed.
Wonder if she will not occasionally look down from her home in glory to see if her loved ones are emulating the beautiful life she tried to live.
With sincere appreciation and sympathy for the family.

Mary Caroline, wife of the well known Dr. A.J. Mayfield, died at the Mayfield Sanitarium, St. Louis, where she had been taken for treatment June 22, at the age of 57 years. She was the daughter of the beloved and honored Franklin Sitze of Madison County. The family has ever been noted for honesty and virtue. Sister Mayfield had been a member of the Marble Hill Baptist Church for several years, but when the Doctor moved to Fredericktown, placed her church letter in the Fredericktown Baptist Church. She joined the church at a very early age and was firm in her convictions of truth and right, and yet she possessed the innocent heart of a little child. She was truly a wife, a mother, a Christian and a charitable neighbor. What more should be required? May God bless the bereaved and may her sweet life be an incentive to all. She is the mother of four surviving children; Ellen, wife of Dr. Ramsey of Eldorado, Illinois; Marada, wife of H.A. Clark of Lutesville, Missouri; Dr. George Mayfield of Texas; Boyd Mayfield, a student in Barnes Medical University, of St. Louis; all excellent citizens and proud to honor their mother's name. In her farewell to the world she was happy. Her only regret was the parting with her husband, children, brother, sister and Many friends. "Well done good and faithful servant."
