Enlisted in Co. "C", 23rd Mo. Vol. Inf.,August 26, 1861 at Middleburg, Missouri. Wounded at Shiloh on April 6, 1892 and lay in the hospital one year. He was discharged 24, November, 1862, due to his injuries. "A patriot who never faltered in his purpose."

He drove a stage from Chillicothe via Trenton to Princeton just after the Civil War. He also drove a notion wagon for L. H. Dalhorf of Burlington, Iowa, delivering goods in North Missouri and Southern Iowa.
William Wilson and Mary Ellen (Taylor) Hampshire were married 20 January 1869 and had eight children: 1. Zilla Francis, 2. Charles Agustus, 3. Edward Wilson, 4. Ida May, 5. William, 6. Clarence Taylor, 7. Clara Mabel, and 8. Albert David Hampshire. William was known as "Billy" amongst his close friends and family. He fought in the Civil War and laid wounded in the battle of Shiloh.
