Isaac Smucker was one of the early settlers of Newark, Ohio. He was one of the best known and most respected citizens of Newark in his time. He was a native of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. He came to Newark in 1825, after a long journey across the Allegheny mountains.
The 400 mile journey was on foot! He was
not a man of means or his mode of travel would have been horse or better yet a family carriage or public stagecoach.

1837-1838 Isaac was a member of the Ohio Legislature.

He was also a member of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society.

In 1867 he helped to organize the Licking County Pioneer, Historical and Antiquarian Society.

Isaac wrote,
