Home Defense Officer Isaac Halbfinger was shot and killed as he and his partner attempted to question a man at the corner of 9th Street and M Street, NW, during the 1919 Race Riots. The suspect immediately produced a pistol and shot Officer Halbfinger in the chest, killing him.
His partner, Benny Belmont then struggled with the suspect and was also shot and seriously wounded. The suspect fled the scene through an alley as he was pursued by a witness.
The suspect was never identified or apprehended.
Officer Halbfinger, a paper hanger, residing at 458 Q Street NW, was survived by his wife, Dina and two daughters, Lena and Sarah.
Home Defense League officers were volunteer special officers who assisted the Metropolitan Police Department during WWI.
Sadly, Dina never remarried and Lena and Sarah never had children of their own.
Many thanks to Keith A. Reinsdorf of Northridge, California for his assistance with this memorial.
Additional thanks to Jerry Klinger for the photos.
And thanks are extended to Dr. Ehud Finkelstein of Tel Aviv, Israel for his assistance.
