Columbus Johnston, an aged and highly esteemed citizen, died at his home in Waynesburg, PA, at 2 o'clock, Friday morning, Jan 8, in his 84th year. He had been ill about four weeks, his death resulting from an attack of grippe. Deceased was born June 4, 1831, in Center township, and lived throughout most of his life in said township.
He was the son of Andrew and Clemina Conklin Johnston, deceased. He was united in marriage March 5, 1855, to Miss Emeline Bane, who death occurred Dec 22, 1895, after a happy union lasting over forty years. Mr Johnston was a man of upright character, known for his integrity, and had been engaged in farming and stockraising for many years in which he was unusually successful. In politics he was a firm believer in the principles of the Republican party. He had been a member of the South Ten Mile Baptist chruch for over fifty years and led a devoted christian life. For the past four years he and his daughter, Miss Dora M Johnston, had been residents of Waynesburg, the father having retired from active duties, and in his declining years his daughter had rendered him every kindness and attention, especially during his last illness. He leaves to survive him and mourn his demise, one son, N.B. Johnston of Khedive, and two daughters, Mrs J.L. Rush of Sycamore R.D. 1, and Miss Dora M Johnston, at home. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs Levina Lively, of Smithfield WV. Funeral services were held at his late home on Saturday at 10 a.m. conducted by the Rev George C Horter, pastor of the Waynesburg Baptist church. Interment in Rosemont cemetery at Rogersville.
