Emma was born April 21, 1901 to Gottlieb and Caroline (Beitz) Drefs, in Tripp, South Dakota. Her parents moved to Max, North Dakota. She married Gotthilf Engel from Garrison, North Dakota on November 12, 1919. She and Gotthilf lived in Sultan, Washington where they raised their family. Emma died on January 15, 1980 and is buried next to her husband.
