Lowry Reid graduated from Clemson Military Academy in 1933 with an Electrical Engineering degree. During the depression he took a job with TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) and worked for them for the majority of his career as a Civil Engineer. He specialized in lock construction with Melton Hill Dam's lock being one of his last assignments. Other dams he worked on included Wheeler Dam, Hiwassee Dam, Norris Dam.
He was a Major in the US Army in World War II.
