The son of Samuel Theophilus & Susan (Sturgis) Beam, he married Anna Margaret Maurer October 4, 1857, and fathered Margaret (b. 07/25/58, d. 07/15/67), Samuel Saul (b. 11/28/60 - shown as a seven-month-old in the 1860 census although reportedly born in 1860), Joseph Hooker (b. 01/16/61 [? - likely 1862]), Sallie (b. 12/08/63, 12/04/65), Ida Virginia (b. 02/15/67), William A. (b. 06/16/69), Harry Maurer (b. 09/28/71), and Andrew C. (b. 12/25/72). In 1860, he was a painter living with his family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 2" tall with brown hair and gray eyes,


A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five in Lancaster October 12, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp Nevin in Hardin County, Kentucky, December 8 as a private with Co. K, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer March 22, 1864, in Harrisburg, and honorably discharged with his company December 6, 1865.


By no later than 1870, he was residing in Mifflin County.
