"William Houghton was born in Rush County, Indiana, April 18, 1836. When a young man he moved to Benton County where he was married to Melissa Jane Blessing, December 9, 1858, with whom he lived in happy married estate for almost 42 years.

To Mr. and Mrs. Houghton five children were born - three boys and two girls. One of the boys, Alva, passed from this life August 8, 1891. The other four children survive, all of them living in Warren County.

Mr. and Mrs. Houghton moved to Warren County first in 1876, settled near Independence. They moved to Williamsport about six years ago and there have since made their home.

Mr. Houghton's church life began at the age of 19, when he united with the New Light Church. In that church he continued until 1864, when he and his wife went into the Methodist Church. In that church he remained until the day of his death.

He was known before the world as an honest, hard working farmer. In the home he was known as a loving, sympathetic husband and a kind father - one who set before his children an example of industry and of a life unmarred by evil habits. He met his death suddenly on the afternoon of Saturday, September 1, 1900, aged 64 years, 4 months, 14 days.

The funeral services were held at the U.B. church at Independence Monday, September 3, Rev. J.N. Greene officiating. Interment was made in Independence Cemetery. Text was Rev. 14th chapter, 13th verse. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." The pall-bearers were: P.W. Lewis, James Anderson, William Wolfe, George Marlow, Newtown Marshall and Jasper McNett."
