Lucinda “Lucy” H. Carter was born at Woodford County, Kentucky. She married John McWiliams on March 13, 1828 at Clay County, Missouri. The couple had one child, a daughter, Mary Helen McWilliams. John McWilliams died in about 1833. Lucinda then married William G. Wilson on August 31, 1834 at Boone County, Missouri. The family departed from Missouri on the Oregon Trail by wagon on April 10, 1845 (Meek Cutoff). En route, on Oct 14, 1845, her husband died of camp fever at The Dalles, Oregon. Lucinda and her daughter continued on, arriving at Linnton, Oregon on October 30, 1845. According to her daughter’s obituary, they arrived destitute after the long migration. On June 4, 1846, Lucinda married for a third time, to David Hill of Tuality Plains (now Washington County), Oregon. The couple lived on Hill’s donation land claim, which was located at what is present-day downtown Hillsboro. David Hill died on May 9, 1850 at age 41. Lucinda married for a fourth time on December 6, 1850 to Wheelock William Simmons, also a settler and farmer in the Hillsboro area. Lucinda died November 14, 1869 at age 69. She was survived by Wheelock Simmons and her daughter Mary Helen McWilliams Moore.
