Served as a deputy sheriff of Greer County Oklahoma. Lived several years in Mexico. John's first wife Angeline Jenkins died in 1899 and he married Kate Hughes on May 11, 1902 in Greer Co. OK.

This information came from Alene Hatley Johnson, Aunt Belle & Uncle Cleve's daughter.

"This is all the information I've ever found on the Hatleys. When John R. Hatley was very small (with a small brother) the mother & father were both killed in an accident. They were taken in by two different families to be raised. John's very early life was spent with a family named Sawyers. John ran away as soon as he was able as the man abused him. John never knew what happened to his brother."
