On December 23, 1968 during Operation Giant Slingshot, two Assault Support Patrol Boats (ASPB) enroute to a preplanned ambush site with 1st Air Cavalry elements on board, came under fire at a position seven miles south of Kiep Hoa on the Vam Co Dong River in Bien Hoa Province, Republic of Vietnam. During the attack, the Boat Captain of A-91-5, BM2 Wallace Going was killed in action from a hostile explosive device. Another crewman was wounded. There was only light damage to the ASPB's.
Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Wallace Going is honored on the Vietnam Memorial at Panel 36W, Line 69.
