HUGO NATIONAL BANK PRESIDENT SUCCUMBS

James Emory Barngrover

President of the Hugo National Bank Dies at Two oclock Last Saturday Morning March 6, 1920

James Emory Barngrover, president of the Hugo National Bank, died last Saturday morning, March 6, at two oclock, at his late residence in Hugo, after an illness of several months. Death was due to pneumonia following an attack of influenza. The attending physicians had known for a week or more that death was near at hand as he was gradually growing weaker. The news of his death was a shock to the entire community.

Mr. Barngrover was a man of many sterling qualities, and his passing away comes as a sad shock to all. He was born near Bedford, Iowa, May 13th, 1852, where he grew to manhood. Before coming to Hugo twelve years ago he was engaged in the practice of law at several places in Iowa.

He was admitted to practice in this state and for a number of years enjoyed a good business. He was also president of the Guarantee Abstract Company and engaged in the loan business. As a land attorney he was counsel for many contest cases at the US Land Office.

Mr. Barngrover was one of the organizers of the Hugo National Bank, which was founded in 1915, and at the time of his death was president of the institution, succeeding Ed Rickenberg last year in that position. During the past year he did not take a very active part in public life owing to his failing health. His convictions to all matters whether right or wrong were honest and sincere, resulting from much careful study and analysis of his part, and with which he calmly met the fate of all flesh.
He was married twice. His first wife, Maggie Scroggie, departed to her Heavenly Rest twelve years ago. To this union one daughter and four sons were born, all of them surviving except a son, as follows:

q Arlington W., a decorator, of Des Moines, Ia;

q Walter J., an attorney of Cedar Rapids, Ia.;

q Rollin J. Barngrover, secretary-treasurer of the Guarantee Abstract company of Hugo

q Pearl Wright of Los Angeles, California.

Four years ago Mr. Barngrover was wedded to Miss Marie Jelmaland of Minnesota, who also survives.
The remains were shipped to Des Moines, Iowa, Sunday morning where funeral services were held and interment made.

In the death of Mr. Barngrover, our city loses a very good man, one who has been as one of us for a number of hears and who took an active part in the public affairs of our town. He was a member of the Methodist church of this city and lived according to the light. In his passing to that younder shore we bow our head in sorrow in the loss of one of our best friends and his memory will live forever in the minds of his many dear acquaintances.

Hugo has lost one of its honored citizens and the town and community joins in extending to the sorrowing children and the lonely widow there
