He was reared and received his education in Sutter. He went to work for the Tidewater Oil Co. as a truck driver, but was later promoted to supervisor of the Northern California-Nevada district.
He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II. He lived in Sacramento and Reno, Nev., before moving to Chico in 1962.
He was a member of the Chico Elks Lodge No. 423, the Bidwell Golf Club and Sons in Retirement. He married Vera Barber of Carson City, Nev., in 1972. In addition to his wife, survivors include a sister, Margaret F. Herman of Folsom; two brothers, Virgil P. Frye of Covelo and Delmar E. Frye of Sisters, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Dennis, died in 1975. Members of the Elks Lodge will officiate at the service. Inurnment will be at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Francisco. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Hall-Van Hook Funeral Chapel.
