Grandpa always thought that his name was spelled Carlyle in fact my Dad's middle name is spelled this way. He did not know the spelling until in the late years of his life when he sent for his birth certificate.

Mada Bird Bardsley, Carlial's sister wrote this about Carlial; Carlial Bird was born August 16th, 1910, at Salina, Utah. He was more my age and we went to school together. He was always my buddy. I remember once they were selling books at the school, Carlial bought me one, (Best Dog Stories). I really thought he was allright. I still have the book. He was in my class some times. He had a lot of boyfriends, Lee Osborn, Clark Evans, Briant Burgess, and Virgil ....(I can't read the last name Mada wrote here). We thinned beets together, crawling up and down the rows of beets, done really good if we earned a dollar a day. And it was always for the relatives, the Nielsons.
Carlial was one that always had a job and could earn money. How he loved to dance and was really classy when he got cleaned up.
I remember when he was working in the Mountains and chopped off his toes. The ax slipped and cut his shoe right in two. He was in Salina Hospital for a week or so.
He fell in love with Erva Pendleton of Fruita, she was just 16 years of age, a niece of Emma's (Archie's wife). They were married December 30, 1932, by Wendel Anderson at Richfield. They worked hard lived in a few different places, until they built a two room home on Dad's lot, until they could buy a lot of their own. They moved it North of the old ball park in Salina, and had a real cute home after building on to it. They had 3 sons, Rodger, Glenn and John Wayne. After the 3 boys were married and they had 12 Grandchildren Erva passed away September 9, 1972. In the Salt Lake City hospital of cancer.
Erva was so good with the crochet hook. She made many beautiful pieces, and she loved to embroidery. She loved to cook and had many good dinners for us to enjoy. She could make bread like no else. But she never complained, she kept her pain and troubles to herself. No one realized she was so sick as she must have been.
Carlial lived in Salina after losing his love one "Erva", until he built a home in Redmond.
Carlial met Lucille Christenson of Redmond and they were married March 1, 1978. They seem happy and we wish them the very best.

I am so grateful to my Aunt Mada for this story about my Grandpa, because I did not know him when he was kind.
Grandpa was a hard worker, I only know him as farmer, he and Grandma grew beautiful gardens. I remember one time when he had bum lambs he had to bottle feed and so he would come over and get us kids to feed the lambs because there were too many for him to feed. Us kids enjoyed doing that.

On July 1st of that year,1971, I turned 16 years old. When I got up that morning, Linda wished me happy birthday, but no one else. I did get a birthday card from Mom and Dad. when I walked into the kitchen Grandpa told Grandma "she knows we do not have any money. And that was that. In the afternoon I walked out of the back door where Grandpa and Glenn's oldest daughter Rose Ann was. Rose Ann showed me all the horse riding equipment her and Grandpa went to town that day and bought totaling $400 according to Rose Ann.

One day I asked Aunt Mada why Grandpa was so angry and she said "I don't know" with the saddest look on her face.

Ray (My husband) and I had my Grandma and Grandpa sealed together and had Grandpa sealed to his parents in 2003, our 29th Wedding Anniversary in the Logan Temple.

I look forward to meeting them someday where I am hoping they and I have changed for the better.
