John was with his sisters Mary and Matilda on a ship to America to be reunited with the rest of the family whom had immigrated earlier. John became ill on board the ship and was taken from the ship on a stretcher to the Ellis Island Hospital. The sisters were very busy processing the paperwork necessary for entry and never saw or heard anything about John but he had apparently died in the hospital.
