Alfred Hilgenberg, 84

Alfred Eugene "Gene" Hilgenberg, 84, of Winchester, In. passed away peacefully Saturday morning, April 4, 2009 at Parker Health Care after a period of declining health.

He was born March 25, 1925 in Coal Grove, Ohio, the middle son of Alfred and Goldie Clare Hilgenberg. In 1942 the family moved from Ohio to Winchester, where he graduated from Winchester High School with the class of 1943. After high school, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Pacific Theatre until he was honorably discharged from the service in 1945 having been awarded the Bronze Star.

He was married to the late Edavene Casto of Dunbar, West Virginia, in 1947, and they remained devoted to one another for 59 years, until her passing in early 2007. After living in West Virginia throughout the 1950s, he returned to Winchester in 1962 where he worked as a machinist at Maul Brothers until his retirement in 1985.

Known to friends and family as Gene, he was possessed of a terrific baritone singing voice and played six different musical instruments. He was a long -time member of the Winchester Lodge #56 F.&A.M. and Fort Wayne Scottish Rite. Gene was a man of compassion who enjoyed golf, sitting on his front porch and being with people and helping others. He will be greatly missed by neighbors, friends and family.

Survivors include: his son, Jerold "Jerry" (wife Debbie) of Chapel Hill, N.C.: a grandson Daniel, of Mebane, N.C.; a granddaughter, Kate of Chapel Hill, N.C.; sisters, Dorothy Clements (husband Charles) of Muncie, Janet Dempsey of Nashville, Tenn., and Lois Bradburn of Portland; and a brother, Robert of Jacksonville, Fla. He was preceded in death by a sister, brother and a granddaughter.

The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Thayer Funeral Home in Winchester with Pastor Jeff Straley presiding. Interment will follow at Fountain Park Cemetery, Winchester. Friends may call one hour before services at the funeral home.
