Alphia Marie Schmitz, 88, a resident of Wenatchee for the past 55 years, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 31, 1997, at Colonial Vista Convalescent Center.

She was born Oct. 5, 1908, to Joseph and Bertha (Winkler) Steiner in Madison, Neb., where she grew up and attended school.

On Feb. 1, 1932, she married Paul P. Schmitz in Cornlea, Neb., and in 1942, they moved with their family to Wenatchee to make their home.

Alphia worked in local orchards and then at the Wenatchee Foods Cannery. She later worked for the city of Wenatchee at City Hall as custodian and retired in 1975.

Mrs. Schmitz was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, St. Joseph Council of Catholic Women and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Survivors include six children and their spouses, Delores (Schmitz) and Frank Piepel, Verlene (Schmitz) and Cliff Carlson, Marlene (Schmitz) and Bill Sinko, all of Wenatchee, JoAnn (Schmitz) and Jack Simmons of Hoquiam, Lois (Schmitz) and Ron McCain of Missoula, Mont., and Gene and Diana Schmitz, also of Wenatchee; a sister, Shirley Quering and a brother, Vern, both of Perris, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, Greg, Dennis, Phil, Susan, Chris, Gary, Ken, Jackie, Jeff, Paul, Brian and Kimi; along with 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in 1980; a son, Ivan; a grandson, Todd; a granddaughter, Wendy; and two brothers.
