Max Ledingham Muir, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 3, 2009 at the Logan Regional Medical Center following a valiant fight with thyroid cancer.


He was born on August 10, 1917 in Kaysville, Utah, a son of Frank Berry and Bertha Ledingham Muir.


He graduated from Davis High School, Utah State Agricultural College, and the Boeing School of Aeronautics.


Max married Vivian Soule on June 19, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death on July 8, 1989. He married Alice R. Nielsen on May 16, 1990 in Brigham City, Utah.


He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings including Stake Young Men's Presidency, Bishoprics and as a life-long Scouter, earning the Silver Beaver Award.


Max had been a City Councilman. He received Total Citizen Award, AARP Community Service Award, and President of the Air Force Association. He had worked for the Air Force at Thiokol and Hill Air Force Base as an Aeronautical Engineer and Manager for many years. During World War II he worked on the Manhattan Project and served in the National Guard.


After retiring, he became Brigham City's Building Inspector, earning the love and respect of the contractors. Max designed and built the current Brigham City Police Station. Max was an inventor and designed and built many homes, cars and boats. He also remodeled or built over 53 bathrooms including the one at John Adams Park.


Surviving is his wife, Alice, Brigham City; five children, Ann Marie (Don) Atkinson, Smithfield; Nancy (Chuck) Shaw, Boise, ID; Janice (Bruce) Munns, Brigham City; Frank (Cindy) Muir, Meridian, ID; Jon (Michelle) Muir, Flower Mound, TX; two step-sons, Reese (Judy) Nielsen, Brigham City; John (Linda) Nielsen, Milford, UT; 27 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and four more on the way (Max's affectionate name among the grandchildren was Grandpa Fun) and his beloved dog Roxy. Preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Marjorie, one great-great grandson, Helaman Sanchez. Everyone that knew Max loved him.


Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Brigham City Eighth Ward Chapel, 139 East 300 North. A viewing will be held on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gillies Funeral Chapel, 634 East 200 South, Brigham City, UT, and at the Church from 9:30 -10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
