A funeral for Ezra Cecil Smith of McMinnville will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville. The Rev. Jim Peterson of the Lafayette Community Church will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.

The funeral home will be open for visitation from noon to 7 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Smith died March 19, 2002, in his home. He was 85.

He was born May 25, 1916, in Hopewell, the son of Cecil and Maude Smith.

He moved in the 1930s to Tillamook, where, along with his two brothers, he owned and operated Holguarten Dairy.

He and Helen Bettencourt were married Feb. 16, 1920, in Stevenson, Wash.

He moved to McMinnville in 1947 and operated a Shell service station in combination with a Hudson auto dealership and a Tucker farm equipment dealership. In the 1950s, he purchased Tigard Wrecking, which he owned and operated until selling it in the early 1970s. He also helped his wife in her McMinnville restaurant, Smitty's Drive-In. The couple built a home in Pacific City and eventually moved there. They moved back to McMinnville in the 1990s.

Mr. Smith belonged to the Masonic Lodge, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Ham Radio Club. He enjoyed fishing and was a commercial fisherman in Pacific City for several years.

Survivors include a son, John Smith of Clackamas; three daughters, Luella Cruickshank of Tillamook, Louann Harwood of Newberg and Dianne Lewis of Juneau, Alaska; a sister, Ruth Gurtz-Arrell of Tualatin; a brother, Paul Smith of Portland; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2000; a son, Larry, in 1999; and two brothers, Mark and Delbert.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children's Hospitals in care of Macy & Son, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
