CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The funeral for Gary W. "Bear" Glenzy of Pinckneyville, Ill., will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville. The Rev. John Venegoni will officiate. Burial will be in a Pinckneyville cemetery.
Friends may call at the church from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A prayer vigil will be held at 5 p.m.
Glenzy, 63, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in the emergency room at Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 15, 1940, at Chaffee, son of John and Lela Carter Glenzy. He and Rosemary Greer were married Aug. 18, 1962, in Chaffee.
Glenzy was a member of the All Conference football team in high school, and was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University. He was scouted by the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.
He retired in 2001 as Panther athletic director, volleyball coach and girls basketball coach, and teacher from Pinckneyville Community High School. He coached football at the high school 21 years, retiring in 1990.
Glenzy started the Panther wrestling program in the mid 1970s, and was the first wrestling coach. He was one of the founders of Southern Illinois Coal Bowl all star football game.
He was elected to the Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990. He was a past president of Southern Illinois Coaches Association and received the Emeritus Coach Award in 2001. He was voted Illinois Athletic Director of the Year in 1988-89. Glenzy was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Genea Pixler of Lexington, Ky.; four brothers, Danny Glenzy of St. Louis, Michael Campbell of Springfield, Mo., Bill Campbell of Jefferson City, Mo., Bruce Glenzy of Kansas City, Mo.; and a sister, Nancy Campbell of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
