14 Oct 1974: Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon from Schaeffer Auditorium, Kutztown, for Dr. Cyrus E. Beekey, president emeritus of Kutztown State College and a native of Myerstown. Dr. Beekey, who was 68, died Friday morning at his home, 301 Pennsylvania Ave., Kutztown. Dr. Beekey served as president of Kutztown State College from May 25, 1967 to Aug. 1, 1969 when he retired. He was a 1923 graduate of Myerstown High School and a 1927 graduate of Albright College. He received his masters and doctorate degrees from Cornell University. Dr. Beekey taught mathematics at Southern Junior High School from 1927 to 1929 and from 1931 to 1943 he taught biology at Reading High School. He then joined the Kutztown faculty as a physics professor, teaching cadets of the Army Air Corps. In 1944 he was named a biology professor and assistant dean of instruction. Dr. Beekey also served as dean of admissions at Kutztown for several years and he was president of the Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association. In 1968 he received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Albright College. The Beekey Education Center at Kutztown College was dedicated in his name in October of 1972. The son of Samuel and Elvy M. (Kilmer) Beekey, he was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Kutztown. Surviving are his widow, Viola B. (Sweigart) Beekey; two daughters, Dr. Lois E. Beekey, a professor at Drew University, Madison, N.J., and Sara Ann, wife of Peter A. Pfaffenroth, Chester, N.J., an instructor at Morris County (N.J.) Community College, and one son, Dr. Cyrus E. Beekey Jr., chief resident physician at York Hospital. Three grandchildren also survive. [Lebanon Daily News]
