"L. Lennon Is River Victim"
A 38-year-old father of three small children became Fort Dodge's third drowning victim this summer after his small racing shell capsized in the Des Moines river about a mile north of Loomis Park Wednesday night.
The victim, Leo P. Lennon of 1416 south Twenty-second street, was testing his new speed boat at about 7 p.m., when it upset during a full-speed turn, throwing him into the river.
Eyewitnesses to the accident said Lennon came to the surface immediately after being dumped into the river, made two swimming strokes, called for help and then sank. His body was recovered about 15 minutes later.
Of the several persons in boats that went to the scene of the accident, only four were swimmers and they each probed the river bottom until locating Lennon. The four were Jack Ruge, Otis Halligan, Buster Hanson and Duane Trickle.
Ruge located the body in the middle of the river only a few feet from where the racing shell capsized. He said the river was about eight feet deep there.
The other three helped Ruge put Lennon in a boat and his body was taken to the east bank where Fort Dodge firemen were waiting, having just arrived and they used resusitator equipment on him for about 20 minutes.
At 7:40 p.m. Dr. Paul L. Stitt, deputy Webster county, cornoner pronounced him dead. Thursday Dr. Stitt said death was caused by drowning.
Lennon had purchased his new racing shell, powered by a 25 horsepower motor, only Saturday at Vinton. He was testing it for the first time Wednesday night in preparation for Sunday's boat races here.
Friends of Lennon said he had been testing the boat for about 45 minutes before the accident and was traveling at about 55 miles per hour when he started his turn.
After capsizing, the boat partially sank with only the prow sticking out of the water.
Lennon, who was not wearing a life preserver, could not swim well, his relatives reported.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a. m. in the chapel of the Laufersweiler funeral home with the Rev. David P. McGoey, pastor of Holy Rosary church, officiating.
Burial will be in Corpus Christi cemetery. There will be military services at the grave.
Rosary services will be held Thursday and Friday nights, at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Born Oct. 22, 1918 at Clare, Lennon was the son of the late Patrick Lennon and Mrs. Anna Lennon, now of Fort Dodge. He was graduated from St. Matthew's high school at Clare in 1936.
He was a veteran of World War II service, stationed with the army in the Philippines.
He was married to Miss Margaret Katnik on Oct 8, 1947.
Surviving are his wife, their three sons, Michael, 8, Patrick Matthew, 4, and Gregory, 2.
He is also survived by his mother, a brother, Gene Lennon of Fort Dodge; and three sisters, Mrs. Peter Fritz and Mrs. Alex Black, both of Fort Dodge; and Mrs. Russell Jondle of Otho. His father died in 1935.
Lennon was employed as service manager for the M & S Sales Company of Fort Dodge and was co-owner of the Mercury Marine Boat and Motor Company here with Jack Ruge and Robert Brown.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Amvets.
Lennon's drowning was the third in the Des Moines river here in the past eight weeks. On July 16, George V. Davis, 42, drowned while swimming only a short distance from where Wednesday's accident occurred and on May 31, Robert Medearis, 10, of Badger drowned while wading across the river near the Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric Company dam.
