He was born November 10, 1918 at Ithaca, NE to Herman and Gertrude (Hageman) Jordan. He attended school at District 16 and District 52, and graduated from Ceresco High School in 1936. During his youth, he was an avid softball player. He married Betty Bergman on March 12, 1947 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ithaca.
He served in the Unites states Army during World War II.
He was stationed in the United States and Europe as a Supply Master Sargeant and earned the Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Medal, and the American Defense Medal.
River worked at a variety of occupations including the CCC program, Markle Produce in Ithaca, and the Wahoo Post Office for 20 years. He also worked in Omaha as a drywall installer for a number of years. River was well known for his talents as a woodcrafter. He made many handcrafted items from fine hardwoods which he gave to friends. He also crafted furnishings and other items for his church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Harvey. Survivors include his wife Betty of Wahoo; son Robert and his friend Cynthia Klaer of Wahoo; daughter and son-in-law Laurie and James Chapman of Chambersburg, PA; brothers and sisters-in-law Harold and Darlene of Wahoo, Wilbur and Connie of Springfield MO, Cecil and Mary of Springfield MO, sisters and brother-in-law Lois and Irvin Heldt of Yutan, Mildred Keane of Valparaiso, and Ruby Krakowski of Omaha; granddaughters Jennifer Sellin, Kelly Jacob, and Christina Sellin; great-granddaughter Camille Jacob; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Ithaca with the Revs. Eric and Rhonda Bostrom officiating. Casket bearers will be Fred Bergman, Steve Berggren, Rob Bonow, Gordon Ohnoutka, Rick Heldt, and terry Jordan. Serving as honorary casket bearers will be Howard Thompson, Virgil Foster, Reinhart Miller, Harley Larsen, Joe Shurtleff, T.J. Sabatka, Bob Wagner.
Visitation will be Wednesday 3-8 p.m. with family present at the funeral home 5-8 p.m. Burial, with military honors, will be at Sunrise Cemetery in Wahoo. Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church.
