Cheney M. Castle
Word was received yesterday of the death of Cheney M. Castle, of Minneapolis, Minn. Mr. Castle was born in Vermont in the year 1829. He moved to Naperville in 1849, and was the first village clerk here and held the office of county clerk of DuPage county during 1861-64. He was then a member of the firm of Willard Scott & Co. until 1872, when he removed to Minneapolis, Minn., and was a resident there at the time of his death.

CASTLE, Cheney Moses was born April 11, 1829 in Jericho, Chittenden County, Vermont, the son of Deacon Joel Castle and Aurelia Lane. He came to Naperville in 1849 and went to work in the store of Willard Scott and Son. He married Elizabeth Naper (daughter of Joseph Naper) November 24, 1851 and from this union they had two children, Mark Cheney and Alma Aurelia. Elizabeth died December 8, 1868. Cheney married Bertha Naper (daughter of Joseph Naper) October 27, 1870. There were no children from this marriage and she died in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July, 1880. Cheney married Catharine M. Cunningham January 25, 1882. They also had no children. He was employed as cashier and bookkeeper of one of the largest manufacturers in the Northwest in Minnesota. He was elected the first Naperville Village Clerk in 1857 and served as DuPage County Clerk from 1861 to 1864. He served as a Naperville Village Trustee in 1871. He was raised a Master Mason June 6, 1850 in Euclid Lodge and served the Lodge as Master in 1859 and 1871. He was exalted a Royal Arch Mason March 4, 1851 and served as Excellent High Priest of Euclid Chapter No. 13 in 1867, 1868 and 1869. He died February 9, 1909 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota and was buried in the Naperville Cemetery.
