He was the son of Hawkins C. FINNEY (1815-1889) and Martha COUNTS (1819-1863).

He was the brother of John, Mary, Francis, Martha Livonia, Amanda, Joseph, Wesley, Cicero, Malinda, Emily Florence, and Esquire Donald.

On August 20, 1862, he enlisted as a Private in G Company, 89th Indiana Infantry. When he enlisted, he was living in Middle Fork, Indiana. He was discharged July 19, 1865, in Mobile, Alabama, at the close of the war.

On May 18, 1867, in Clinton Co., Indiana, he married Catharine E. ORR. Their son Mattthew was born on February 23, 1868. Catharine died a month after their son was born.

On December 6, 1898, in Clinton Co., Indiana, David secondly married Mary Alice FORD (the widow of John EIKENBERRY). David and Mary Alice's daughter Mary was born in 1899; their son Levi was born in 1900. Mary Alice died in 1905.

David was a farmer in Clinton Co., Indiana.
